Wingfoil gained global popularity in 2020 and, in Ceará, it has been occupying more space along the coastline each year. Jeri is already one of the beaches consolidated as a major international stage for the new sport, which combines a board with a mast and foil and an inflatable wing. Consistent winds, stable sea conditions, and wide sailing areas create a technical environment that attracts competitors from different countries and positions Jeri as a global reference for the sport.

For Feli Ceballos, the current Brazilian wingfoil champion, the Jeri stage was a great opportunity for exchange among athletes from around the world: “we go out to dinner with the best athletes in the world and have many chances to learn on the water. For me, the Jeri stage is the best, precisely because of that,” the athlete comments. The winners of the regional stage of the Brazilian Championship were Paloma Gutierrez and Juan Matias, while the winners of the World Championship stage were Maria Spanu and Kamil Manowiecki. In the overall ranking of the season, the Brazilian titles were won by Felicitas Ceballos and Juan Matias, while the world champions were Maria Spanu and Mathis Ghio in the women’s and men’s divisions, respectively.

The first wingfoil school in the village, Ticowind Jeri, was founded shortly after the first lockdown, in October 2020. “Jeri had just reopened and we launched the wingfoil school with a clinic led by Fernando Mizo, a Brazilian hydrofoil athlete,” recalls Eduardo Giudici, a professional windsurfer who traveled the world sailing and found his home in Jericoacoara. Edu and his wife, Giovanna Ferreri, lead the pioneering school, where they also teach windsurfing, surfing, and stand-up paddle (SUP), in addition to wingfoil.
